Warning: It's all Kurono-sensei's fault. ALL HER FAULT.

Mid-afternoon, Sano set his practice spear down on the scuffed wooden floor while the men began to clear out of the stuffy dojo and asked, “So why do you insist going on all the raids, anyway? It’s almost as if you want to find him.”

Shinpachi put on a skeptical, guarded face and let the tip of the bokken scrape against the ground as it hung from his scarred hand. “I don’t know what you mean,” he said, raising a sleeve to wipe his damp forehead, peeling matted bangs from the flushed skin. “We’re Shinsengumi. It’s what we do.”

“Every single one,” Sano repeated, unperturbed.

Shinpachi had always hated this facet of Sanosuke’s character, disliked the hidden talent for observing all the things people would rather be left alone. “It’s fun?” His eyes lowered as Sanosuke thinned his mouth to an unimpressed line and waited. He shrugged helplessly and turned to put the equipment away. “I don’t know,” he admitted, padding across to the wooden racks leaning against the far wall. “Maybe I do want to find him.”

“Are you that angry with him?” Sanosuke inquired, tilting his head and watching as the small figure grew smaller. “That you would want to kill him?”

“It’s not that,” answered the other, staring at his feet. “I’m not really angry. I’m afraid of the raids too, Sano. I’m terrified of going and seeing him there and having to dig a hole in his stomach with the katana.”

Sano shook his head. “Then why go? I don’t understand.”

After every mission, Shinpachi backtracked to the entrance, but not without rolling every fallen body over, looking at the stiff, pale faces while fear gripped his heart with a relentless fist and thundered in his head, saying, ‘He’s already dead. While you weren’t looking some nameless soldier came and killed him thoughtlessly, pushing the blade in, pulling the blade out, and left him there to die alone.’ And while Shinpachi was terrified of having to kill his enemy-friend, the thought of not being the one to kill him maybe scared him even more.

Shinpachi smiled slowly, bitterness in his throat. “I owe him that much, to be there.”

Ohhh. That just hurts so much. I love the way you write the Trio, especially Shinpachi. Not that easy to find non-comedic Trio fiction, yesss. Thank you so much!
